Can anyone recommend the best antidepressant for anxiety?
I am having a medication review next week with my GP and feel that I need to change the antidepressant that I am on, Lustral aka Sertraline aka Zoloft as it does not seem to be helping anymore.
My anxiety has got worse. I can managed to make myself get up and go to work in the morning but all day feel very very anxious.
Symptoms I am now getting are:
Cannot cope with any stress at all
Cannot cope with crowds, noise or busy enviroments
Cannot cope with any confrontation, will physically shake
Feel like want to hide away from everything
Feel like can’t stop things going roung in my head
Feel irritated all the time
At times I get so overwhelmed by small things I feel that my brain actually stops working for a few moments , kind of shuts down.
I am finding it all harder and harder to hide at work and when get home feel exhausted from keeping up an act all day.
The only time I feel slightly better is when I am at home and can shut the door on the world. But still then will carry on thinking and thinking and worrying and feel really irritated if anything intrudes on my peace eg phone calls etc etc.
Any ideas to say to my GP when I go next week??
Thanks
Michelle
It sounds like you need an anti-anxiety drug as well as the antidepressant. Unfortunately they are addictive, so your GP may be reluctant to prescribe one. Diazapam (Valium), or Lorazepam would help you.

You might need an anxiolytic (e.g., a benzodiazapine) rather than an SSRI. However, if you want to go with an anti-depressant which also has anti-anxiety properties, you might want to try Paxil or Wellbutrin.
Good luck,

I’ve been there. You need to get fit, do lots of exercise instead of lots of thinking and over a few months you will begin to feel better. Start off slow and build-up your time exercising and you will start to feel a lot, lot better. The depression will still come and go but it will be greatly reduced and you will be able to control it better once you are really physically fit

i would strongly advise against vallium being as it can make you stay in your exhausted and "brain shutting down’ mood.
i would suggest Ativan, seriously look into this, i think its your best soloution.

The only person who can answer your question with a degree of professionalism is your GP. They are the ones who know you and past medical history. For instance people on here may think they know best and suggest a certain drug. It could be you are allergic to it and the only one who knows that is your own GP.
Please don’t take on board any suggestions you get from people here about your health.
Tell your GP all the things you are saying and feeling and let them decide whats in your best interest.

Hi Michelle, I am privy to Paroxetine or Paxil. It covers everything you have mentioned above, and especially works well in the social area. I have heard very good things about Effexor from others as well. It can take up to 2 months sometimes before we feel better, so you may have to dig deep for extra patience. In the meantime, be selfish with you, and do whatever makes you feel good and/or try some new activities. If being alone works for you, then do it as often as you can & take long baths, read, or zone out in front of a feel-good movie that you enjoy. If you are responsible for children then of course we also have to care for them too. Anything that will not put you in danger, and that will pass the time until you feel better again, do it! …Be honest with your doctor, but always keep in mind that we are responsible for our own healthcare. Sometimes we have to demand what we know works for us. Hang in there, you will have your life back in no time. Do take care.
